Las Garrafas, a former winery on Méndez Núñez Street

Meeting place for young people from the Malaga scene

Las Garrafas, the former winery in Malaga

Las Garrafas was one of Málaga's most iconic and beloved wineries, a place that maintained its authentic essence and traditional character for almost a century, becoming a meeting place for the young people of Málaga's movida. Since its opening in 1915, this establishment became a point of reference for locals and tourists seeking to experience Málaga culture in a space full of history and character. The rustic decor, which maintained the charm of the past, was notable for its traditional large, transparent glass carafes, or "dama juanas," which were used to transport and store wine and, in a way, gave both the establishment's name and its identity. This vintage Málaga tavern atmosphere, with its stone walls, wooden tables, and decor evoking times past, created a warm and welcoming space where you could spend a pleasant time surrounded by family, friends, or even acquaintances who shared that tradition.

One of the highlights of this winery was its Málaga wines with designation of origin, renowned for their quality and authentic flavor. Visitors could enjoy them accompanied by one of its typical tapas, prepared with homemade recipes that conveyed Málaga's traditions and popular culture. Among the tapas most popular among customers were Russian salad, Malaga salad, octopus pipirrana, cod with ratatouille, stuffed tortilla, and Moorish kebabs, these being some of the favorites for their distinctive flavor and traditional taste. What most caught the attention of visitors, both locals and tourists, was the fact that, despite being a long-established business in such an iconic location, it managed to remain fresh and appealing to young people, who enjoyed traditional food in such a special setting. Furthermore, many tourists came specifically to experience the authentic flavors of Málaga, seeking to immerse themselves in the local culture through its simple, homemade dishes, which were often included in the daily menu, thus providing a complete and affordable experience.

Nowadays, however, maintaining that spirit and identity amidst market changes and intense competition in Málaga's historic center is very complicated. The saturation of similar establishments and high rental prices have made it difficult for places as traditional as Las Garrafas to continue. The center has undergone a transformation dominated by chains, trendy businesses, and more modern offerings, sometimes leaving these spaces steeped in history and roots forgotten. In 2014, this iconic establishment was replaced by the famous Morrisey's pub, which represented a radical change in the concept of the place, opting for a more modern and distinct style, aimed at a different audience. Although many mourn the disappearance of Las Garrafas, it is also a reflection of how the city is evolving and how traditional businesses must adapt or give in to new trends and market needs.
