Where was Picasso born?

On the 25th of October, 1881, Pablo Ruíz Picasso was born in the well-known Plaza de la Merced in Málaga

In this house PICASSO was born on the 25th of October, 1881. Commemorating the IV congress of intellectual cooperation held in honour of VELAZQUEZ (February 1961).

So says a plaque found inside the building situated on the corner of the so-called 'Casas de Campos' of the famous Plaza de la Merced in Málaga. The eclectic-style 'Casas de Campos', to which number 15 belongs - where the painter Pablo Ruiz Picasso was born - have occupied the entire northern side of the Plaza de la Merced since their construction in the second half of the 19th century (1869), by architects Jerónimo Cuervo and Rafael Moreno. This square became a public space following the Conquest, as a Royal Order of the Catholic Monarchs established a public market there in 1489.

The 'Casas de Campos' are built on part of the site of the old Convent of La Paz, which was demolished in the 19th century as a result of the confiscation laws. They form two regular-shaped blocks. The birthplace of Pablo Ruiz Picasso has facades facing Plaza de la Merced, Calle Merced, and also a rear facade to the Pasaje de Campos. Number 15, although the smallest of the group, we can say that the 'Casas de Campos' were at the time multi-family rental properties, and their location, size, and typology denoted a bourgeois character. This house is listed as a monument of BIC in the BOE (Official State Gazette) of May 27, 1983.
